Until a couple of weeks ago, Endless Dismal Moan was unknown to me (how empty my life was then…) so I bought this one on a complete whim, not really knowing what to expect but nonetheless confident that my leap of faith would reap dividends (as just about everything on blackmetal.com is well worth investigating). The hunch proved correct; ‘Lord of Nightmare’ is an intense, consuming and exhilarating journey to the depths of a madman’s inner psyche – with no possibility of parole.
"No matter how deep you dig, you will be hard pressed to find BM as scathing, corrosive and utterly nightmarish as this, the brainchild of a clearly warped Japanese individual hiding behind the pseudonym of Chaos9. Like the strongest drug, the blissful mindfuckery of ‘LoN’ cloaks you in claustrophobia and induces feelings of irreconcilable insecurity, paranoia and hopelessness.
"A swirling maelstrom of twisted black malevolence works its way into the listener’s subconscious as the diabolical darkness overcomes you wholly. And you surrender willingly... Proceedings remain perfectly lo-fi throughout, allowing just enough of Endless Dismal Moan’s psychotic psychedelia into the receiving mind to render all who dare go here thoroughly addicted.
"Swarming guitars and cold keys form a shrill wall of desperation; the drum machine hammers incessantly and unobtrusively; and Chaos9’s unbelievably tortured inhumane screeching lays waste to everything and everyone in sight. Occasional piano (particularly at the start of #s 1 and 5) and soundtrack-ish interventions lend a surreal touch, ensuring that the ride never becomes tedious or boring.
"‘Thirst for Pleasure’ benefits greatly from the creator’s attention to detail and the eerie and deceptive beginning of ‘Thirst’ lures the listener into a false sense of security before he/she is mercilessly fucking decapitated. BM extremity taken to a logical extreme (!), this fourth track is an outstanding demonstration of everything the subgenre can be as it continues to evolve and morph, transcending a multitude of interesting alleyways with nary a cul-de-sac in sight.
"Astonishingly, Chaos9 manages to ratchet the aggression level up to unprecedented degrees on the title track, a white-hot slab of nasty noisy malice and violence that would give Merzbow a run for his money. This is bruising black metal served with broken glass and razor blades, with a knee in the balls for desert. It’s caustic, punishing, demented and totally unique. Without a discernible riff or vocal line anywhere on the album, ‘Lord of Nightmare’ is almost indescribable and hauntingly beautiful.
"Long before the last tortuous strains of paint-stripping, skin-peeling, mind-melting ten-minute masterpiece ‘ENDLESS DISMAL MOAN (9 to Death)’ has invaded your pathetic life, you will know that things have changed irreparably. This priceless bastard of a CD will have you roaming around graveyards in the middle of the night looking for freshly-interred corpses to reclaim and violate. Hot on the heels of Infinite Hatred, those weird and fucked-beyond-redemption Asians have gone and done it again.
