~ DARKTHRONE's FENRIZ Presents "Best Of Old School Black Metal" ~
Snapper Music has set a September 20 release date for "The Best Of Old School Black Metal", a compilation consisting of "the most influential and most unholy sounding tracks" of the black metal genre as selected by DARKTHRONE's Fenriz.

"Cult heroes such as SARCOFAGO and TORMENTOR lurk amongst tracks from originators VENOM and BATHORY," according to a posting on the Snapper web site. "The second wave of black metal is well represented by BURZUM, MAYHEM and SAMAEL, whilst the inclusion of AURA NOIR and NATTEFROST, the latest exponents of quality black metal, make this a collection that no fan of ferocious metal should be without."

Fenriz personally selected all these tracks, and the accompanying booklet features extensive notes giving his insight into each song, its relevance to him and its impact on the scene.

~ Chilean Black Metal Fan Kills Priest, Attempts Suicide: Nation In Shock ~
A Chilean black metal fan killed an Italian Catholic priest two weeks ago, slitting his throat just after the priest had finished giving Mass at Santiago's Metropolitan Cathedral.

Horrified churchgoers heard Father Faustino Gazziero scream as he was attacked, but most did not actually see the killing as the priest had already walked away from the altar.

"I only saw when people took the knife away from the [attacker], but I clearly heard the Father's cries," a man who identified himself as Raul told the Santiago daily La Tercera.

Authorities identified the assailant as Rodrigo Orias Gallardo, 25. Orias (online photos show him posing with MARDUK in Chile) smeared his face with the victim's blood and then stabbed himself several times in the chest and neck with the same knife, several witnesses said.

Orias, who admitted that he made the 1,900-km journey to Santiago from his parents' hometown of Coyaique with the intention of murdering a priest, was rushed to a hospital and underwent surgery. He was under arrest.

He was reportedly not under the effect of drugs or alcohol at the time of the July 24 attack.

Police have recovered inverted crosses, goats' horns and a number of heavy metal albums from Orias' rented apartment in Santiago.

Chile is a devoutly Roman Catholic country and the killing is seen as a direct attack on the Church.

The Chilean media is said to be in shock over the incident and has focused on finding a connection between the killing of Father Gazziero and Orias' devotion to black metal bands like DARK FUNERAL and MARDUK. Several recent TV programs have featured discussions about sects, Satan and Satanic metal, generating the kind of media frenzy unseen in Chile since the Church banned IRON MAIDEN from performing in Santiago almost a decade ago due to the band's "demonic" overtones.

Orias, who had a pentagram branded on the left side of his chest (covering his heart) and several other Satanic symbols tattooed on his body, reportedly asked DARK FUNERALsinger Emperor Magus Caligula during the Swedish black metal band's visit to Santiago last year to burn an inverted cross on Rodrigo's arm with a cigar, a "mark" which he later planned to make into a tattoo.

Over the course of the last few days, several churches in Chile have been vandalized and others have received anonymous letters and phone calls threatening to kill more priests during the coming weeks.

Father Bernardino Zanella, the vicar responsible for the Servites in Santiago, told the Missionary Service News Agency that "the phenomenon of Satanism in Chile, as in other countries of the world, is growing strongly. Numerous groups are active in the country, especially in the cities, although in recent years their presence has also spread to minor urban centers."

To date, these groups "had limited themselves to desecrate and commit acts of vandalism in sacred places and cemeteries, but it never happened that they attacked persons," the Servite added...

~ DIMMU BORGIR Thrown Off Air For Using Profanity ~
DIMMU BORGIR were promptly escorted from the premises after using profanity during a live radio interview Wednesday afternoon (August 18) for commercial rock radio station WMMS-FM (100.7) in Cleveland. The Norwegian black metal act were in town to promote their appearance on the main stage of Ozzfest at the Blossom Music Center in Cleveland on Thursday, August 19.

The incident in question occurred shortly after the start of the interview with WMMS midday host, Maxwell. While responding to a question from the DJ regarding JUDAS PRIEST vocalist Rob Halford's sexuality, DIMMU BORGIR vocalist Shagrath and guitarist Silenoz stated that the controversy surrounding Halford's homosexuality is "fucking bullshit" and that it was an honor to play on the same stage as JUDAS PRIEST. Maxwell proceeded to declare the interview over at that moment and cut to a commercial. During the commercial break, Maxwell and station management ordered the band to leave WMMS studios. After coming back from commercial, the DJ insulted DIMMU BORGIR on the air, urging Ozzfest attendees to throw rocks and other items at the stage during their set on the main stage Thursday.

The band is claiming that the boundaries of what they could say on the radio were not explained to them by station management before the interview, and that they had no idea what was considered unsuitable language for American radio. At this time, there is no indication that any action will be taken by WMMS's corporate parent, Clear Channel Communications.

DIMMU BORGIR are currently performing on the main stage of this year's Ozzfest in support of their 2003 release, "Death Cult Armageddon", which has sold over 65,000 copies in the U.S. to date.

~ VENOM Are Tracking Their 'Heaviest Songs' For New Studio Album ~
British black metal pioneers VENOM are currently in the studio recording their new album, tentatively due in early 2005. "They are recording the heaviest songs from their demo sessions for their next opus," reads a posting on the band's official web site.

VENOM's current incarnation consists of mainman Conrad "Cronos" Lant alongside drummer Antton and latest addition, guitarist Mykus.

~ DISSECTION: Stockholm Show Gets Upgraded ~
Due to overwhelming demand, reactivated Swedish death metallers DISSECTION's much-anticipated comeback show in Stockholm has been moved from Klubben to Lilla Arenan, according to the band's booking agency, Skrikhult. The gig, which is scheduled to take place on October 30, will also include a performance by DEATHSTARS, the Swedish band featuring former DISSECTION drummer Ole Öhman and guitarist Emil Nödtveidt (brother of DISSECTION leader Jon).

As previously reported, DISSECTION are currently in the studio with a full lineup, working on their first studio recording since 1995's classic album "Storm Of The Light's Bane". The first single and video is scheduled for release in September 2004.

Acclaimed Hungarian black metal vocalist Attila Csihar (ABORYM, ex-TORMENTOR, ex-MAYHEM) is tentatively planning on teaming up with Mick of ANAAL NATHRAKH, Shane Embury of NAPALM DEATH, Necrobutcher of MAYHEM, and former CRADLE OF FILTH/DIMMU BORGIR drummer Nick Barker in a brand-new project called BORN TO MURDER THIS WORLD, the singer revealed in a recent interview with the Swedish webzine Metalheart.se. Csihar added that it is not yet certain that the project will ever see the light of day, but that plans for the collaboration have existed for some time.
