Review: "Volcanic Rock" saw Buffalo reach heights that had only been hinted at on the "Dead Forever" disc.
After constant touring around Australia they had perfected a sound which drew on the best of the predominantly blues-based "Oz rock" sound of the time, but also incorporated a heaviness which was unique amongst their peers, and not shared by most other bands - the AC/DC of that period included!
This is not to say they drew any direct influences from overseas, but their style immediately hit a certain chord with those who were starting to turn onto the much louder things coming out at the time elsewhere.
They never ceased to entertain, from huge gigs to, believe it or not, school dances in grungy little halls where crowds went berserk calling out for songs.
"Shylock" from this album was a particular crowd favourite. Most of the songs, depending on the night, could be guaranteed to feature extended (and very heavy) guitar work outs.
The '73 appearance with Black Sabbath has become legendary for those who witnessed it, the bands amazing performance stunning the crowd, and leading to the perhaps apocryphal story that Ozzy asked not to have them support if Sabbath ever came to town again - they were too bloody good!
Suffice to say that for those who saw Buffalo at the time, this album is great - but just a mild hint at what they were really like live.
No track on this album can really be singled out, because they all show a level of creativity and passion which serve as a reminder of a damn fine time in Oz music.
You should definitely play this one loudest when you are lucky enough to get it - but get it you must!!
